Sad Kenton Bar Pub News
Never, EVER, call it the Crofter’s Lodge………. Seems the Kenton Bar is now closed, shuffled off this mortal coil, deceased. It is a dead parrot.
I found this on Flickr today. The text below the photo reads:
Tyne & Wear: Newcastle Upon Tyne: THE CROFTERS LODGE
Situated at Kenton Bar, Newcastle Upon Tyne, THE CROFTERS LODGE was pictured on February 10th 2011. It was originally called THE KENTON BAR, but the name was changed in the late 1980s. A run past it on March 19th 2011 found it boarded up.
3 things in my opinion have given rise to this sorry demise:-
- Continuing to serve Vaux beers
- Allowing woman into the bar
- Adding a conservatory
excellent if tragic photos...I have been told by riff -raff that they intend to convert the pub into an old people's home...if so I hope they keep the bar, and I will sign in when I am old...
ReplyDeleteI can remember in the late 1970s that the Kenton Bar caught fire. Certainly the roof was destroyed. My granda was an Exhibition drinker so was obviously not sympathetic. I doubt he ever set foot in the place. His preferred local was the Wheatsheaf which like the Kenton Bar got renamed.
ReplyDeleteMy old man would drive miles to get a "decent Pint" (which to him meant McEwans Scotch). Ponteland, Three Mile Inn, Fox & Hounds. He occasionally went in the Balloon under sufferance. As far as I know he never went in the Kenton Bar or the Kenton Quarry.
ReplyDeleteThat conservatory is truly horrible, an absolute eyesore...the wood on the windows might be useful for bonnie night...ruffians & bounders from down the bottom, make it so...
ReplyDeleteInteresting about the fire, never knew bout that.talking of fires I remember one time being on the mental 10(actually it was not mental as it was during the day-only mental after last orders) and it went past a kid called Les Tyson's house.anyway, his house was on fire and poor Les was running around outside like a headless chicken, tears streaming down his face not knowing what to do about it...
ReplyDeleteRumour has it that his nickname was Bucket Head - cannot think why................... Maybe he should have filled his bucket head with water to douse the conflagration?
ReplyDeleteI remember taking emptis back to the Kenton Quarrie Offie to purchase things like crisps, choccy, pop and if there was enough chips
ReplyDeleteYeh - Kenton Quarry offy was only open intermittently in my recall. There was also an offy at Kenton Shops near the bookies shop. Always had a nice beer and tabs smell inside.
ReplyDeleteThe part where the conservatory is had an offy at the back originally
