kenton bar football team 1974-75

Kenton Bar Football Team 1973
Here is a photo I found during more extensive research in a library...
I remember the football team played for the 'Bagnall Cup' and played 'derbys' v St Cuthbert’s and also v Mountfield, North Fawdon, Wyndham, Montague and Snow Street (we and everyone else always thrashed Snow Street at least 12-0-their home pitch was at an angle of 45 degrees...)
Note the' flag pennants' which were inspired by the Leeds United strip from the 1973-74 season on the socks of some of the kids in the front row...these had the numbers of the players on.
the 10 first team players are all wearing the blue top with yellow hoop:the' subs' are wearing... whatever!
It looks like they must have won the Bagnall cup that year!
Anyone recognise themselves or any of the players?...
(The tecka is Mr Brownlaw, a true gentleman...)
PS:Photo not taken at Kenton bar school-note the basketball net-maybe taken at Kenton school?...)

  2. master, back row 3 is 'Snappy', not Dave Ferguson...

    ReplyDelete
  3. as in Ginger Snap ? makes a change from just calling them ginger bastards I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Master, you may be right as to the origins of his nickname...Snappy became a binman-I have seen him over the years pushing a bin trolley round the streets, a most noble profession... he once got belted off Mr Lawrence up at Kenton I recall for refusing to get a shower after PE:in those days they took no notice of adolecent embarrassment...

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think the kid in the center with the ball "ooer" may be Peter Embleton

    ReplyDelete
  6. correct, another posh kid from the top end like snappy the binman, but even posher...

    ReplyDelete
  7. Tony Adcock, Ian Thompon (Dropsey), Dave Thirkell, Tony O'donnell Peter Embleton
Ian Bright(Brighty) Are a few to mention

    ReplyDelete
  8. all correct anonymous, well done, to be pedantic, 'Dave Thirkell' was Dave Thirkeld, and 'Ian Thompon' was Ian Thompson...
Tony Adcock was from the 'normals' part of the estate, whilst Tony O'Donnall(O'Donald?)Peter and Brighty were from the 'posh' top end...
Dave Thirkeld and Dropsy were ultra posh types(They came from Kingston Park...)
NB:there is only one 'peasant' from the bottom end on the photo...anyone identify him?...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Which one is Tony adcock? I sat beside him on my first day at school and I cant recognize him inthat line up

    ReplyDelete
  10. Right next to the goalkeeper-to the right of him.Tony is wearing a blue top with white hoop(the 'old' strip before the 'new' one with the yellow hoop...)next to Tony is the only kid I can't name, because he left before the last year I think.Anyone name him?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Tony had a delusion later in life - he thought he was jamesd Dean - mouching about and never talking to people with daft slicked back hair and a leather jacket. Wonder where he is now.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He is on Facebook!!! still in the kenton area I think

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is the kid at the far right hand side front row Terry Mullen? (His house caught fire when we were at Kenton)... he used it as an excuse not to hand in homework for about 3 years.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is Thirks to the right of Peter Embleton?... could someone put the names in order on the rows please?
    Cheers.

  15. Correct Anonymous, the kid at the far right hand side front row is indeed Terry Mullen AKA 'Pea' Mullen. As you have unlocked his identity I can now answer my own question 'there is only one 'peasant' from the bottom end on the photo...anyone identify him?...' and tell you this was 'Pea', who lived at the bottom end of Hartburn Walk(No offence Pea!)
Pea used to come up to you at playtime and adopt a most aggressive stanc(head slightly cocked to one side, feet planted firmly apart, fists clenched to the side staring right into your eyes and say(in a most menacing tone)'Sultan?...Sultan?...
Now what he meant by this was'Are you insulting me?...Are you insulting me? He would wait a few seconds then suddenly shout 'KEEEEEEEEMON!!!!!(Meaning 'COME ON!) and lean forward so his torso was horizontal and attack you with his flaying whirling fists...Pea never tired of this 'sport', but we did...however I remember we all used to copy this and indeed I do it to this day if anyone disses me... ;)
Why he was called'Pea' I dont know...did he eat loads of peas?...was he incontinent?... Ha ha ha!(Sid James style...)

    1. Pea Mullen was a horrible little bully who I stopped from hitting a another boy over the head with a small boulder whilst at KBJS one day.

He obviously took exception to this and if memory recalls correctly his older brother called me out after school at the park at the top of both our streets and I sorted him out! Tough kid mind, but he wasn't going to beat me.

  16. Correct again, Thirks is to the right of Peter Embleton...

  17. Oh, sorry anonymous, just realised you wanted the back row as well:

  18. The lad affectionately known as "snappy" has confirmed himself it is him. He now man handles unpleasant people in the West Road Jobcentre.

  19. The team were Top:- Mr Brownlow, Mark Ellerby, Dave Grant, Paul Wright(Snappy), Col Hindmarsh, Tony Adcock, ? (forgot his name but his mother had a cool orange ford capri with a black roof!!), Gordon Craig, Ian Bright(Brit), Dave Ryle(Spill), ?, Ian Thompson(Dropsy), Peter Embleton, Dave Thirkeld, Tony O'Donnell, Dave Brown and Terry Mullen (Pea)

However we still do not know the name of the kid to the right of Tony...but at least we know a bit about his mam's car!

Keep it coming chaps!...any other memories of your time on that wonderful estate?...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey, you lot... why was 'Dropsy'(Ian Thompson) called 'Dropsy'?...

Great foto are you in this, Ian? Well the Captain's got to be Peter Embleton and maybe the second guy to his right (looking at the foto) is Terry O'DonnelL. Not quite sure but is that Granty, two to the right of the teacher. He was good friend of our Mark and he died in a motor bike accident, many moons ago. Some familiar faces but the names have gone. Expected to see Gary Hogg on this?
