The Children’s Home
This is the children’s home in the park at the end of Studdon Walk. I was only ever in their a few times and I tell you brothers it was a real eye opener. No longer did the parental threat of being sent to the children’s home have the same fear inducing capability. The children’s home was massive, they had a pool table, table tennis, nice places to sit. I WANTED to be sent to the children’s home for god sake!!
The home itself is still there and thanks to G.O.M fr this fine picture. I am not sure if it is still a children’s home though?
Mark Wakenshaw, a kid with glasses and an ear piece lived there...also a blond wedge headed kid who looked like the bassist from Modern Romance lived there-his nickname was 'Tyer' as his first name was 'Tyrone'...
ReplyDeleteThe home consisted of two joined bungalows-I wonder if it was purpose built or converted later on?...note the addition of the gate and the wall to the right of it is a different colour and brick type so must have been added on to enclose the courtyard area...note also the wall of the bungalow to the left(that would be the kitchen of a normal bungalow) seems to have had had most of the original brickwork replaced at another time to the courtyard wall...I wonder why?...indeeed the courtyard wall brickwork looks very new...also I wonder what the outbuilding(the one with the 'no ball games' sign on) is for?...storage?...Prey tell how you 'got to go in' a few times Master, I am intrigued...
ReplyDelete'tyer' shud be spelt 'tyre' idiut...
ReplyDeleteFrom what I recall of the plans it was designed for the Social in the footprint of two bungalows. I seem to recall it having two brick walls to enclose the courtyard with an opening but not that outbuilding.
ReplyDeleteThe home is no longer a home if you know what I mean!-it is now 2 separate bungalows for council tenants-it stopped being a children's home about 4/5 years ago...I wonder what prompted that decision?
ReplyDeleteWas there girls in the home or only boys - I only remember boys.
ReplyDeleteI remember only the Wakinshaw and apparently Tyre...both boys...
ReplyDeleteGary and mark. Wakenshaw
