Duwana Woods & the Red Hills
Hello avid fans of the blog...
I have already alluded to Duwana Woods elsewhere on the blog(god knows where...) I recently had to take a taxi that passed round that way and the taxi driver reckoned there is a 'Duwana Hall' in those woods which is why they are called 'Duwana Woods'...however I was not convinced...but what I do recall is that these woods were down from Kingston Park Estate, and the ultra ultra posh types who attended KBP School(eg 'Dropsy') ) and lived on the newly built ultra posh Kingston Park Estate in those days used to spend their spare posh time in the said woods playing 'man eating monkeys'... only those posh types can unlock more details of this game via the comments, though I know all details...
As to 'The Red Hills' these lay due north of KB Estate and were clearly visible and intriguing to the eye, especially from the plateau....now they are gone :(

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have a photo of the pond with a little island on it that was near the ruins and what became meadow rise estate ? The A1 runs through that pond now. Spent many afternoons there catching newts and legging it from so called glueys who were meant to be at the ruins. Class to see the Pyri. Climbed them ridges many times
ReplyDeletethou doth mean Leeches Pond(see post August 2009 'Leeches Pond'& post Sept 2010'Dens and the mastermind'...)
ReplyDeletealas as of yet we have no photo of it...as for Meadow Rise Estate...surely still here to this day...
thank thou for thy interest and contribution droog :)
After extensive research I know know exactly where Duwana Woods is...note this is off topic of the blog, but would anyone like to know where it is?
ReplyDeleteYES
ReplyDeleteThat foul mouthed fellow Bosnoid wants to know where Duwana Woods is...the problem is I dont know how to imbed a link to google earth in comments...(Shades-can you help?)anyway, go towards the airport past the twin farms pub & Bullock Steads Sports ground...just after the bus stop on the right is a small road called South Drive-to the right of that lies the Duwana Woods, clearly visible on Google Earth-note the winding road going through it-I now distinctly remember going there once with ultra posh types from Kingston park( Davies, Gorman'king Lizarder' & Riley...)
ReplyDeleteIt must be here- South Drive, Woolsington.
ReplyDelete(Can't say i ever went there. got as far as Bank Foot on foot. Used to go to Ponteland on Sunday mornings for a couple of Pints when I was nearly drinking age, always nibbles on the bar. Also the blob machine in the seven stars would provide free stock if clouted!)
Yes, spot on Shades and thanks for doing the link(the woods marked by the red 'A')
ReplyDeletei remember that pond as being called THE POND OF LIFE, can't ever remember it being known as leeches pond.
