Northern Echo 1964
I am speechless with joy...let's leave it up to the comments...click x2 on the images for a bigger image so you can see the photos and read the article...
Thanks to Rutter Carroll, friend of the blog and author of the book 'Ryder & Yates' for providing us with this magnificent artifact...
That is great, I think we knew of the existence of this, didn't you try to find it earlier?
ReplyDeleteWhat really stuns me is that it only cost £2 Million pounds. These days the Pyramid would cost that!
Yes indeed Shades, I did...I spent hours & hours one day looking at microfilm in Darlington Library thinking the year was 1969/70!
ReplyDeleteNevertheless all good thing come to those who wait!
Now come on you lot...what can you gleam from the photos/article?...I can see loads of stuff we didnt know!(maybe because I'm re reading the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle'Sherlock Holmes'...recommended reading!
Mensforth... great news and highly enlightening but Im more intereted in "Police seek van driver".C'mon... own up.By the way I read somewhere that Shades went to stocksfield avenue..me too..the teacher I fondly remember was mrs fewster...she had a sausage dog..dont remember its name, but she used to bring it into school..honest to god.she actually lived on kenton bar and suggested to my mam that she would be happy to drive me to stocksfield school...away from what she thought was the riff raff of the kenton bar primary scholars...eeeeeeh what a snob.Mam declined.Mensforth...how old be you and do you have any sisters...me thinks I know you might be?!
ReplyDeleteFancythat, yes I did go to Stocksfield Avenue, until 1968 when we moved to Kenton Bar. I didn't appreciate what a good school Stocksfield Avenue was until I went to Kenton Bar, which was, frankly, a bit shit. Mr. Brown was a miserable old bugger & turned out to be a kiddie fiddler. I can't remember the name of the Head Teacher but it was something to do with cardigans, pullovers or jumpers.
ReplyDeleteThe Head Teacher at Stocksfield was Mrs. Simpson, a grumpy little old lady. I had Miss Varley in my last year, but only for a couple of months.
I revisited it a few years back with my Son, if you are interested you can read my blog about it here.
This is a brillian piece of material Ghost of Mensforth - well done mate and thanks to Rutter Carroll for contributing this.
ReplyDeleteNote: On the picture is a mysterious block of flats - looks like about 15 stories - obviously never materialised.
Wish the pic was a likkle-ikkle bit clearer then we might just be able to see the model of the pyramid.
master, I am moved by you kind words of praise, thank thou...I haunt the rampards of Castle Kenton Bar only to serve you...as for the isometric view in the first top photo the
ReplyDelete'15 story'block of flats caught mein eye too:seemingly located on the Kenton School field down from the plateau, this never materialised...and where is Ryal Walk?...also the blocks of flats down the bottom of Ryal Walk extending far out on the Kenton School fields also were never realised...
What words of wonderful wisdom was Gordon saying to Councillor Cuthbertson?...alas this we will never know...but that is undoubtably a model of a kenton bar bungalow they are discussing...whats that the councillor has got in his hand?...wonder if the model still exists?...
ReplyDeletethe 3 story block of flats shown in the article was the only type of housing I never ever went inside/got to see...anyone describe the interior please?
ReplyDeletemuch appreciated :)
ghost of old mensforth...WHOOO!
I went in the stairwells delivering leaflets, but that doesn't count!
