Kenton Bar School Football Team Circa 1972

Hi – I unashamedly stole these from Friends Reunited. These clearly show the “Ha Ha” fence, the bungalows and the oval structure on the side of the school. They also show Mr Pyle the teacher and some kids – I only recognize Fergy. Mr Pyle looks about 15 years old on this picture.

Tantalizingly JUST behind the school is the beloved pyramid – oh where is she?

  1. Even if they knocked the school down you'd struggle to see the Pyramid from that angle. You'd get a nice shot of the cascade and the ramp though.

  2. Outstanding photos master well done sir!
    I deduce the following:
both photos taken on the same day, photo 1 backrow far right is Gary Hogg, front row L-R number 4 is ultra posh Fergie from the top of the estate.
Photo 2 L-R gary is number 2 and has rolled up his sleeves for this one.
Note the haircuts are less bowl like as on the 74-75 and more post 1960 Beatles(certainly Mr Pyle)
    (See http://kentonbar.blogspot.com/2009/09/kenton-bar-football-team-1974-75.html)
    so I guess maybe...71-72.
Squad of 12 wearing the 12 original strips also visible on photo 74-75...
note also how in those days the sun used to shine and the sky was blue...

  3. Note also in photo 1 the 'ha ha' fence is visible in the ditch running towards St Cuthberts school on the left, and was made of wire not wood as in photo 2...

  4. That reminds me - when I was a young man and a pupil at Kenton Bar School we had an amazing snowstorm. We gathered an army of about 20 kids in the yard and proceeded to make the biggest snowball we possibly could do - it took the strength of the lot of us to roll it in the end. We finally pushed it into the ditch and knocked over the ha ha fence. Incidentally the fence lay smashed down for some time and we also played with that. We lifted it up one day and dropped it on Jeff O'Brien's leg, breaking it. Oh what fun we had!

  5. TAKE NOTE - The Teacher, Mr Pyle, is wearing a tie. Not like the freekin' tramps you see trudging up to schools these days. I am glad to say all the teachers at my son's school (not in UK by the way) wear proper pants, shirts and ties at all times. Even the ladies.

  6. Just went to google to look up kenton bar to show my son the Iconoc Pyramid....more of that later and who do I see but my Brother... on the footy team.1ST pic, front row 2nd from the right and 2nd pic front row 1st on the left.,namely Steven Burke.I'm the little sis Suzanne.I,m not great with computers and am wondering how I can get a copy to send to him.I dont recognise anyone else (except Mr Pyle..who must be at least 100 by now!!!) but I'm sure Steven would. It'S really made my day seeing the photos as we used to watch all his matches....eeh the good old days. Now to the Pyramid.I remember fondly the old tarmac on the shoes for added grip and could shin up to the top no bother.....however getting back down was the tricky bit.One of our friends ( Lesley...if you are out there..sorry pet) who was very slight in build was dared into climbing to the top.Well bless a tiny little cottons..she got to the top with some encouragement but once there she was petrified to come down. With a lot of instruction on the correct procedure she swung over away from the edge onto the flat bit and came down like bolt of lightening. We all thought we could catch her...sorry Les.She ended up in casualty with a few broken limbs.

    Listen!... check out this post:

    (I've copied it below)

'I dont know if Ive mentioned this before but somewhere on the face of this godforsaken earth there exists a painting of the 8th wonder of the world painted from the bottom of the ramp looking west up toward the Pyry...it won a competition I seem to recall...I was only a kid at the time, but can remember it was painted by Jocie Burke(Suzanne and Russell Burkes' mam-they lived in Reestones Place)
This needs to join the list of 'mission impossibles'-someone to try to find Suzanne or Russell and see if they've got it!-maybe we could get a photo of it and up it on the blog?(Friends Reuinted?...facebook?...)

Suzanne, do you remember this? please please please reply and let us solve one of our mission impossible's on the blog! Do you, Steven or Russell or you mam have the painting? If so please please please email/reply either to submit@thunderbirdink.com or post a comment on the blog...let us post up your mam's painting of the pyry I beg of you!

    best wishes,

  8. Suzanne - didn't you have a black dog called Roy?

  9. Bosno:
Nein, that was Micky Cookson's dog-he lived on Reestones Place like Suzanne, Russell and Steven(see post'dogs on Kenton Bar Estate the estate'Feb 2010)
Suzanne was good friends with Micky's sister, Lyndsey Cookson I seem to recall-the cooksons moved up to Walkworth to run a pub/hotel...

  10. Hmmm....it could be peter embleton(the captain in the 73-74 photo in these 2 photos(photo 1:front row L-R (2) and photo 2 L-R (4), because in the 74 photo he has his boots slighly inverted not flat, and this is the case on photo 2, so Shirlock Holmes might deduce that it is him but younger...-Suzanne, please ask your brother Stephen if he can identify the rest of the team and post a comment-that would be great :)

  11. Suzanne:
re your mate Leslie's method of getting back down from the top of the pyry:
'With a lot of instruction on the correct procedure she swung over away from the edge onto the flat bit and came down like bolt of lightening. We all thought we could catch her...sorry Les.She ended up in casualty with a few broken limbs' that advise was obviously most unsound:the safest method was as follows:come down via the vertices/edges,as you went up but this time in reverse, going backwards, frog leaping down if you know what I mean....ha ha ha!

I do believe Montague had Kevin Richardson (Everton) playing for them up front? He scored shedful goals but we still stuffed em..;-)

  17. I remember playing v Montague School once Mr Pile had left Kenton Bar and he was the football team manager for them...I distincly recall that some of them wore boots...but not football boots mind but bovva boots(honestly)and they were as dirty as Leeds Utd back in the 70s...a most unsavoury lot...

    1. Ha Ha, pretentious - Moi? - a very apt description mien anonymous friend - we ARE a couple of overblown pretentious tits - at least we know how many letters that tits has.... Anyway the blog is a tongue in cheek sort of place where you can say what you like without fear or prejudice. As for the estates social zones - well - if the truth be known you are right - there weren't any but if it is any consolation I was a definite borderline red zoner myself having lived in Thirston Way all my life. I know the Lamb family very well believe me, Kevin, Paul, Mark, David and Derek, but I cannot for the life of me remember who lived next door down or up. Mr. and Mrs Lamb were lovely folks and always welcomed me into thier home with open arms 2nd from top was Paul Clark's family and top was another Clark family yes - below the Lamb's home was for a time the Patels - lovely girls I seem to remember. Give us more of a clue as to who you are. maybe you want to be a contributor to the forum? Drop me an email using the link at the side of the blog and I will reveal who I am to you and maybe sign you up as a blog contributor?

The Ghost Of Mensforth will however always remain anonymous to all.

Just one last ting - I am definitely a left pretentious tit and not a right one - how about you?

    2. I can't believe I'm being so smutty, but you really need to brush up on slang words for parts of the female anatomy. I'll reiterate for you... t***ts. Count the asterisks!

You really don't remember who lived either side of the Lambs's and yet you must have spent a considerable length of time in and around their house throughout the 70's and early 80's. I think you're being slightly disingenuous and vague. If you're not being so, then that's okay. It matters not to me really, just wanted to take issue with the 'zone' thing. I'll decline your kind invitation to drop you an email or become a blogger. Not really my thing, life's too short to be honest.

Incidentally, I'm very much on the left, politically so, and my wife is prominently so, thanks for asking.
