  1. Yes about 18,I worked there from being a baby at 14..John shame on you for exploiting the young.Cash in hand though but..no questions asked.I managed to to save my crap wages for ages and went on holiday with said rodent and his very gorgeous wife Maisy,Mandy the daughter and the 2 little uns Andrew and Joanne. We hoidayed in Faliaki...very quiet in those times...PARTY ANIMAL LOCATION NOW.I was promoted to the sunday shift(by the by we had a "pressy down till" and one had to be good at maths to tot up all purchases made)and was welcomed by Peter ( ginger monarch..but deed canny). We closed at 1.0clock and I was KKKK.NACKERED.I was even known to do the paper rounds for the lads who didnt turn up ...namely Mickey Topping...who I snogged at one point..I had a huge crush on Mr Topping and as I did Peter Embelton...He was too posh for the likes of us middle estatees...Yes he was from the posh end.I do remember however that he got terribly stuck behind the lampost.. near the swings on Reestones and the fire brigade were called to release him.Ahhhh memories.

  2. I can remember that the paperboys used to nick sweets when the staff weren't looking, they'd put choccy bars into their newspaper haversacks.

I also remember one time buying something with a ten shilling note and getting change for a pound, what an evil child I was for not owning up!

  4. Very informative, Suzanne thank thou...if you look to the right and find the'blog archive'in white then scroll down a bit to 'June' in orange and click on it you can find a picture of Hillsview School football team...Topps(Micky Topping) is there at the back...
    anonymous commented about him:
'Topps(number 5) has an expression here reminiscent of Bruce Forsyth...
    'good gayme, good gayme'!
Incidently, when Topps played football I recall he ran with the ball with a slow lumbering gait reminiscent of Chris Waddle...but he was not as good as him obviously...'
Peter Embleton is also the captain on the 1974 Kenton Bar football team phot which you can find here on the blog...

  5. A ten bob note was 50p, there were twenty shillings to the Pound.

I do believe that I went into North Kenton News the day decimalisation happened. (Decimal Day, 15th February 1971).
