Kenton Bar Celebrities Pre-1988 – Joanne’s Van

This was a “mobile shop” that used to be situated at the bottom  of  Thirston Way tucked in to the parking space next to the garages backing onto the YWCA building in Dugdale Road.

I have no idea if the person who owned the shop was actually called Joanne or even if it was mobile as it never seemed to move. This mobile shop had a peculiar aroma – not a bad one but distinctive. Kind of like groceries, potatoes, sweeties and cleaning agents all mixed together. I seem to remember the van was blue and was basically open all day and until late into the evening, long after the VG and so on had closed.

Anyone else remember this?

  1. Can I add to this blogg...Kenton Bar Celebrities...Does anyone rememeber Tom Mackie being on the Golden Shot. How cool is that.He lived in the Bungaloids running along the school walk, studdon walk..I'm not sure, and would have had the best view of the beloved pyramid.Wife namely Eileen and chldren Helen and Philip..who is now a policeman type fellow.I do seem to remember Tom came home with the very trendy "hostess trolley".I saw Eileen and Tom recently in Tescos.Dont know if they still on KB.

  2. A nice piece of info thank thou..incidently in the post 'Alleyways' someone commented that Jimmy Mottram, son of Mr Motramm had appeared on 'Catchphrase' in the mid 90s and had won a few grand...Mr Mackie and Mrs Mackie were forever having to come out and tell the hoard of kids playing football to stop kicking it off the wall of their house...(the said wall served as the other goal whilst one goal was drawn onto the huge concrete drop wall down from the plaza at the shops... it would have only been their kitchen wall , so I dont see why they bothered...

  3. Phil held(maybe still holds) the record at Kenton School for the fastest ever 100m...
He was in the Chronicle some years back when he got married or proposed or something at the top of St Mary's lighthouse at Whitley Bay...

  4. The Van, because it was open long after the shops closed, always had the highest prices for every item

    1. Joanne was the name of the daughter and I think the dad was called John but not 100% certain of that. They lived behind the alley way at Thirston Way between it and the garages there.
