  12. Nelly also became known as 'blacktooth' because one day he was playing cricket at Kenton School and a kid named Frank Kirton bowled a ball at Nelly who was batsman...Nellie missed the ball with his bat and it bounced up off the ground and hit one of his front teeth, killing the nerves and the tooth quickly developed a blackish sheen...a horrible swine immediatly said to Nellie'I name you 'blacktooth Nellie' which was abreviated to 'blacktooth'...

    1. Mr Mensforth is wrong-Nelly(blacktooth) was actually the backstop when Franky bowled the ball(I cant remember who the batsman was) and somehow it missed the batsman's bat and hit his tooth as he attempted to catch the ball-as Mr Mensforth says it killed the tooth nerve instantly, turning it black overnight- some horrible cruel swine saw it next day as Mr Mensforth says and christened poor Neil 'blacktooth', a nickname that no doubt destroyed his self esteem and ruined his life for ever...

    ReplyDelete
  17. And why was 'Pea Mullen' called 'Pea Mullin?...was he obsessed with eating peas?...did he have a bladder problem?...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ecky was called Ecky because he was specky. The nickname was actually "Specky Ecky Westgate" which by the way he hated.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Pea - I guess because he was small and "cute" like a pea? - nooooooooo - because he was called Peter Mullen you DIP. Terry Mullen was another Mullen brother. Terry, John, Peter and Angela (the sister)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Egg - was called Egg because it sounded like Eric - his real name. Spud - well he was Eggs younger brother - what goes with Eggs? Answer: Chips....made from spuds.....da da da.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Master re 'Dorf'...on this occasion your wisdom is correct...I checked Wikapedia and the definition of 'Dorf' is:
'one of several towns named Dorf in Germany (Dorf translates to village)'...Rowntree was indeed'tall, blond and Nordic like'...BUT...who gave him this nickname?...how in them dim dark distant days, books not being read much either did some veck fing out the meaning of 'Dorf' and put 2+2 together and label the hapless Rowntree with this nickname meaning 'german village'...slang meaning meaning idiot?...It was not me!

    ReplyDelete
  28. We had a spud in the 60s/70s, a Paul Tate. Tate, Tater, Spud. Oh, the imagination of it.

hanging around with you posh kids from the top was a privelige.

Dippy Dave - yeah what a character. He also had a CB "handle" = 'Italian Stallion" - ho ho ho.

  40. Fergie: note this post is about nicknames...with respect, terry O'Donell Kev Allen etc are names not nicknames, hence not mentioned-I remember them, but not their nicknames-did they have nicknames?...decka allen counts as decka was his nickname, not his real name...incidently dippy dave has a new nickname now,'whippet' due to his life long hobby of having whippet dogs...good to hear from you I remember you well, you posh type from the top end!ps yea, Im sure people dont believe the stuff you posh types got up to, sword fencing, lacrosse and fox hunting etc...

Nice to find this site with all the memories.

  42. You fuckin' dope - get a dictionary. It is DUTCHY as in Holland. Oaf

    ReplyDelete
  43. Turpin - I remember him. There was some graffiti on a garage door near the top of the estate that I always remember - I always reckoned that Brit (Ian Bright) wrote it because it sounds like something he would have said. It read:-

"Turpin's eyes are rather bent - by Marmaduke Earwig"

Always made me chuckle when I passed this garage and read it - it was on there for years and years............

  46. Ghastly Twins:John & Peter Cockerill...

  47. The chap you mention as 'Balancing Head' was Dave Something...lived along the electric houses off Thirston...he was so named cos during the time of the wedge haircut and smoothies(1980ish) he attempted to become one( a smoothie) by cultivating a massive wedge...he developed the habit of trying to 'balance' this on his head at an angle of 45 degrees so that it kept its shape and made him look gorgeous and irresistible ...in this he failed...he just looked as if he had a broken neck...(no offence mate)

    ReplyDelete
  48. 'Howling Heels' was also known as'the bear' cos she looked like a bear...she was from down Eland...

    ReplyDelete
  49. 'Flipper Flopper Ant' used to frequently get the mental 10 to god knows where when we used to get it 'doon the toon' on a Friday night...I noticed that he always used to stand at the front and talk to the bus driver...he never sat down....I reckon he was a frustrated bus conductor...like Jack off 'On the Buses'...I wonder what he talked about to the driver?...

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ant was probably on his way to a whoring club or a swingers party - discussing his preferential positions with the driver. I heard he particularly likes what is commonly known as "spit roasting"

  51. dippy dave, real name david richardson, cb handle italian stallion, goes by the name of davey whippet now or just whippet and still lives in north kenton, strange lookin lad to say the least but harmless. david's claim to fame came in the shape of the music and dance tv show called THE HITMAN AND HER hosted by pete waterman. i recall a story of david many years ago, back in the days when cb radio was at its height. david and another lad on the cb got into an argument and a fight was arranged up by the pyramid at kenton bar, loads of people off the cb radio turned up including the lad david had been arguing with, hours past but still no sign of david. it turns out that david's arse went and he decided to take refuge under his bed which must have been a sight to say the least because at 20-30 years old at the time and standing 6,3-6,5 it must have been a bit of a squeeze for him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. anonymous
can you elaborate on the'david's claim to fame came in the shape of the music and dance tv show called THE HITMAN AND HER hosted by pete waterman' bit?...cheers

    ReplyDelete
  53. Why was 'Bing' called 'Bing' and why was 'Nelly' called 'Nelly'?

    ReplyDelete
  54. in reply to anonymous about THE HITMAN AND HER, dippy dave was on the show when it came to newcastle, it was held at the oxford galleries when it was going under the name of studio, david got up on stage and began to croon to george michael's careless whisper, however not being content with that and much to the dismay of pete waterman david then began to get carried away with himself and proceeded to encourage the audience to rub his cranium, if you would like evidence of this monumental moment in david's life you can see for yourself by going on youtube and typing in THE HITMAN AND HER NEWCASTLE, it's the one under the heading CARELESS WHIPSTER, it gave me a chuckle as i'm sure it will you, ENJOY.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mint! Interestingly on the Utube documentary Dave says he still sings Jimmy Nail songs & I can imagine he could do-he looked and speaks a bit like Jimmy Nail-but the pitch of 'careless whisper' was clearly to high for him-very well choreographed documentary-loved the bit about 'gettin a kebab and gannin yem in a taxi!'
    Thanks a lot anonymous!

    ReplyDelete
  56. glad u found it entertaining anonymous,i know i did. as for the short documentary itself i could'nt help but wonder why it was made, it was obvious by the way it's been filmed and edited that it was done by someone who knew what they were doing and not a mate of david's videoing it on their phone. so why has someone taken the time and effort to undertake this project about david and his HITMAN AND HER experience.!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. in regards to why the short documentary was made of david's HITMAN AND HER experience i'm playing with the idea it may have been a student project. if anyone can shed anymore light on this matter it would be much appreciated.

  66. 'Large Forehead'...who or what was this 'Large Forhead'?...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just to tidy up a loose end, Mebbys was called that for his poor decision making skills. Whenever you asked him a yes/no question, he nearly always answered Mebbys.

He went on to work as a Telephone Engineer, an excellent career choice if you don't like making decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  68. There is mention of an'un yeux' on this post-that means one eye, so whoever this poor sod was he/she must have had only one eye...I also knew a 'demi pied' which I believe means 'half foot' in french(this person had half a foot...)

  69. Anyone remember 'Throckley Hero'?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Aye - I remember him. A blonde wedge headed ponce from Throckley - a "bigger lad" as I remember as he must have been 18 at least - used to 'fight' on the Newbiggin side in the wars..... Of course he was the hero of the fucking horrible Newbigginers because us proper teenagers used to run away from the so called hero-bastard. I do remember one day though me and Ordy hid in the corn with a load of others and the feckless hero came to try and do his usual shouting and running - as he led his team of kiddies through the corn we stood up and took tha bastard with stones and sticks.
