Kenton Bar Celebrities Pre-1988 - John at North Kenton News

John - where do I begin. John was owner, operator and all round Mr. News of the "North Kenton News" newsagents shop at Kenton Bar. The shop was large and sold sweeties, toys and most importantly FIREWORKS. John, if he thought you were not a complete nutter, used to sell you bangers, rockets and in fact any sort of firework whether you were 16 or not. My favorite were air bombs. Set an airbomb near the cube flasts and light the blue touchpaper, stand back, nay run back, and admire your work. By far the loudest firework on the block at the time it used to eject a single ball of light and detonated with a bang so loud it resonated throughout the estate - just so happened that the height of explosion I worked out was just about at the height of the top floor windows on the cube flats...the rest as they say is history - loud history.

    john craigie, left kenton bar shops and went off to metro centre. shop hasnt been same since

kenton bar football team 1974-75

Here is a photo I found during more extensive research in a library... I remember the football team played for the 'Bagnall Cup' and played 'derbys' v St Cuthbert’s and also v Mountfield, North Fawdon, Wyndham, Montague and Snow Street (we and everyone else always thrashed Snow Street at least 12-0-their home pitch was at an angle of 45 degrees...) Note the' flag pennants' which were inspired by the Leeds United strip from the 1973-74 season on the socks of some of the kids in the front row...these had the numbers of the players on. the 10 first team players are all wearing the blue top with yellow hoop:the' subs' are wearing... whatever! It looks like they must have won the Bagnall cup that year! Anyone recognise themselves or any of the players?... (The tecka is Mr Brownlaw, a true gentleman...) Name the cup. Name the year.   I know one of them - far right hand side, Machiavellian smile, lizard eyes, domed stupid melon hair - Phil Leaver.  He once played for Newcastle United.
