"Reinvigorating the Region" Exhibition - HERE
Shades commented that he would be interested in a photo of Gordon Ryder as well-here is one of the two great architects together from the RIBA exhibition I went to over the weekend, so I hope they don’t mind me using it on the blog. So Shades, do you recognise him!?
No, the man I remember had glasses. He must have been the project engineer rather than one of the architects. Disappointing that. Mind you, having been involved on the fringes of building projects, the architects aren't on the ground too much and tend to concentrate on aesthetics rather than minutae. (I've heard stories of clients waiting until the handover to rearrange the furniture and fittings how they want it, otherwise the architect keeps arranging to put it back, especially if the RIBA photos are imminent).
ReplyDeleteShades - it may be Ted Nicklin you were thinking of. He was a third partner and later a co-partner. He was also, as you suggest an Engineer, I believe
ReplyDeleteThanks anonymous for this, yet another missing piece of the jigsaw possibly found...
ReplyDeleteShades, Ive email my contact at Ryder and, fingers crossed we might be able to up a photo of Ted Nicklin for you to ID :)
My friends,
ReplyDeleteThe blog received the following email from our contact at Ryder Architects:
'Hi Mr Mensforth,
There is a photo of Ted Nicklin in the Ryder & Yates book, not sure we have the original but will check it out. It may be a couple of weeks before I get back to you'
Shades, didn't you say you now have the book?...
Shades: you have the book...Is there a photo of Ted Nicklin in it?...is this the man you spoke to all those years ago?...any chance you can up it to the blog?
ReplyDeleteIf Ted is in the book it isn't clear from first look, although I did check out all the references to him in the index.
ReplyDeleteJolyon, if you are reading this, let me know what page it is on.
I think I've found it now- page "x" has the Ryder & Yates staff circa 1968. Ted is probably the guy at the back standing behind Peter Yates (4th from the left) although he is facing to the side so I'm not 100% certain. There are two others with glasses and I'd put 2nd choice as third from the right but less likely.
ReplyDeleteI'd be delighted if I'm right, that is a childhood memory from more than forty years ago.
I'll snap it and email it.
Brilliant! Shades, I will check with my contact at Ryder to verify your ID
ReplyDeleteDid you get my tweaked snap and the one of the ramp sensor?
ReplyDeleteShades, I presume this will have gone to the master...I await this plus several other things that only he can do...I am just a cook...a lowly lowly cook...
ReplyDeleteShades, my contact at Ryder sent me this email:
ReplyDelete'Dear Mensforth,
Please find attached a photo of Ted Nicklin. Unfortunatly the quality is not very good. it looks as though it came from a newspaper...'
They also ask that the picture be credited to Ryder Architecture for use only on our blog, so thats the masters' department...I can tell you that Ted has a beard and is not wearing glasses...as soon as the master has done the necessary I will up the photo...
Buggrit.
