Pubs on the estate
Well actually there were none, nor are there any now! There was of course the 'Kenton Bar' at the top(Now the Crofters Lodge ha ha ha-I never saw no farmers round kenton bar!-get off my land!) but technically that was not 'on'the estate.
Other options were the 'Kenton Quarry' along by Kenton Shops(Alas no more) or the 'Kings Court' at Kingston Park Shops-alas no more, now a Boots/Next.
I never liked the kenton Bar a)because it was a right chore to trail up the bloody hill and b)it wasn't an S+N pub and didnt sell Ex(exhibition)-in fact it was a Vaux pub which = mackums=taboo!(I didnt like vaux beers either)
The posh kids from the top ended up using the Kenton Bar, the peasants from the bottom the rough Quarry whilst the normals went down the Kings Court...(what nonsense...! ;)

I never liked the Kenton Bar because that is where my Dad drank - did not want him to cramp my style.
ReplyDeleteIn Rutter Carroll's sublime book 'Ryder & Yates' Gordon Ryder speaks of the pub that they intended to build but which sadly never saw the light of day(or rather night): a single story pub with 3 sections-men only bars, public & cocktail which they saw as taking the place of the 'traditional community hall'-I wonder why it wasn't built as they seemed to see it as integral to the central hub(the piazza)...
ReplyDeleteI have just discoved that apparently the Kenton Bar Pub AKA the Crofter's Lodge has been closed for several weeks and the intention is to turn it into yet another old people's home...
ReplyDeleteWhy has the culture of 'going to the pub for a drink' died out?...

ReplyDeleteI imagine that if a brewery had been interested it would have been built, but 650 houses probably were not enough to be viable as the estate was effectively at the edge of civilisation.
ReplyDeleteComing over there in December, 10th will be there til 21, are there any pubs around there. will be staying in Fawdon from 15 to 21, somewhere close would be nice!
ReplyDeleteI would recommend the Jubilee or the Blacksmiths Arms on Gosforth High Street...but remember I'm a working class ghost from Kenton Bar Estate!
ReplyDeleteI remember when we moved to KBE 1969 my dad worked for S&N Breweries, we were told a pub was to be built on the area of waste land in front of the Off License....was to be called the Green Man.
ReplyDeleteyeah it was. but it was refused planning permission to close to the school
DeleteMost interesting anonymous! Any idea why that name was chosen?...
ReplyDeleteI personally think 'The Pyramid' should have been the obvious choice...
