Elusive Bollards
Ok – a gauntlet was thrown down by Shades….find the “drain pipe bollards” – for those of you not in the know these were bollards improvised by filling a section of grey PVC drainpipe with concrete and then embedding it in the ground. Designed as a method to stop people driving their cars on the paved areas. I had thought that there would still be a fine example at the top of Thirston Way – but alas the evidence gleaned from Google earth says no….
Anyone else remember which streets that bollards were erected? if so get going on Google earth and see if they are still there……

I found one - first one to find it wins a biscuit
ReplyDeleteNotice that 2 are different, most likely replaced after being smashed down or uprooted. There may have just been enough space for a car to get through without the 2 new ones. Master, any recollection about such a deed of devilry?...
ReplyDeleteThe pipe bollards had a secret- the pipes were filled with concrete first with a gap left near the top- then they were inverted and cemented into place with a piece of 4x2 timber in. This was so that the Fire Brigade could sledgehammer them if they needed access.
ReplyDeleteThey were prototyped in Eland Close, including the Firemen testing them. Within a year or so the timber had started to rot and the concrete started getting lower in the pipe!
