Car Wash Thingies
Aside from bollards there were other various pieves of street furniture – among them were these curious little “huts” that had a standpipe inside supposedly for car washing. I never saw one that worked (if it were opened) and all the closed ones seemingly had no keys. Anyone else remember the location of these little blighters?
Here is one I found at Eland Close

I remembered these independently yesterday and was going to suggest it in the comments. Pretty much every street had one somewhere. Keys were issued to tenants with cars as the Estate was completed.
ReplyDeleteAll the keys were the same, of course. They may have been push-down taps to fill buckets, rather than turn-on taps for hosepipes.
The dumbbell-shaped garage crescents in the upper part of the estate had at least one each. I see from Google earth that these have been partially demolished and landscaped.
I imagine that most of the Rediffusion cubby holes have also gone now. When the Estate was fist built, TV aerials were forbidden.
I have clear memories of these taps being used people used to wash there cars from them as the split levels have them right next to the row of garages opposite their homes. There is still a few of them about thou not in use today.
