The Maps….

Does anyone remember the maps? – There was one on Hartburn Walk in front of the 3-storey flats and one behind the off license next to Dr. Raj’s surgery. We used to find our house number and then scratch it out for some reason. it is a pity that I cannot find any pictures of the maps online nor the graphics – anyone got one?

  1. Monsieur Mensforth:There were also maps down at the number 8 bus depot at hazeldene/border with kenton, and 1 I think at the 1/2 way up Ryal Walk near west end of Apperley Ave. Reasons for scratching out names?-
    1. To 'show' where you lived-by unshowing it!
    2. To 'spoil it' for geeks/mates so people couldnt find them if they were looking for where they lived ha ha ha!
As everyone did this the maps were soon rendered useless as all house numbers were obliterated.Thereafter their only purpose was to be sat on for a rest by the mongul hoards of kids running amoke playing fox and hounds etc on the estate...ahh those were the days!

  2. The one at the top had a sort of parking pull-in above it off Kenton Lane. The Ryder & Yates book describes it as a "viewing platform"!

  3. I often wondered why that little car park bit was there...the driving school that was opposite on the other side of kenton lane subsequently used it at the end of a test to make you park up before telling you whether you passed or failed..I experienced the despair of failure before the euphoria of success on my second attempt! Anyone else remember that?

  4. I now think there were 5 maps on the estate:
a)Top of estate south of viewing area east of Hazeldene Ave T1A's
    b)Junction of Apperly Ave/Ryal Walk
    c)Mallowburn Crescent Shops/Dr Raj Surgery
    d) Studdon Walk Bungalows
e)Number 8/9 Bus terminus, bottom the estate...
I would pay solid gold for a map...
