Two memories about Kenton Bar School–there will be others as time goes by….
Memory 1: Anyone remember the mobile dentists van that visited the school twice a year? I remember it being a sinister looking grey van that used to park at the bottom of the ramp near the back entrance to the school kitchens. It always emitted a kind of weird chemical smell. It was like a cross between an Airstream caravan and a mobile library wagon. I was never unlucky enough to be a patient at the mobile dentists because I went to another one in West Denton for some reason. However – I was always scared that my name would be called and I would disappear into the grey van……………. never to be seen again. The windows were opaque – spooky………..
- Memory 2: Anyone remember when they parked a kind of prefab building in front of the infants school – on the field? What was it for?

I remember this prefab building...it faced south and was placed in front of the lower west south facing classroom of the junior block(actually to the east of the infant block)...incidently, according to Rutter's Ryder & Yates book, the infant classrooms were originally designed to be those of the ground floor of the junior block...when I arrived there this was not so:there was a purpose built infant school separate to the junior school to the west of the original school...but back to the prefab block...
ReplyDeleteIt's purpose?...maybe to accomodate the extra influx of pupils when Kingston Park Estate was built where there was no school?...I dunno, but I do recall that ruffians and bounders from down the bottom used to shelter in the porch bit in the dark notchy of winter, bog knows why...(I vidddied them with mein telescope from the top of the plateau whist studying for mein cub scout astronomy badge...but I've already told you bout that...) explain all Mr Johnstone!
It faced EAST you dorf.
