I see sea shells on the sea shore….
Why were some of the houses rendered with millions of crushed sea shells? Why were the garage roofs covered in gravel? Only two of the many mystery’s that have plagued my single-celled mind as of late. What was the origin of the sea shells? The Caribbean or the Seychelles, North Shields or Whitley Bay? I like to think Cullercoats myself….I spent many a fine hour as a child picking them off the walls……….
Seashells on the walls: aesthetics?
ReplyDeleteOrigin: Unknown.
Irresistible urge to pick shells off walls:same as popping bubblewrap...
Gravel on garage roofs: stop moss/weeds rooting?
I once ran into the wall of my house, head on (don't ask) and I was left with a few shells embedded in my eyebrow!!. We used to pick the shells off the walls too.

ReplyDeleteI remember as a kid standing at the top of hazeldene looking north east over kenton school fields, where far in the distance right on the horizon you could see Palm Trees and i wasn't on drugs, can still see em now!
The gravel on the garage roofs and most other roofs was white or light grey quartz gravel. It was to absorb UV radiation to stop the roofing material getting "burned' or degraded too quickly by UV light. It also reflected sunlight to stop the dwellings getting too hot in summer. That is my take on it.
