Demolition of Thirston Way Garages=...Turnips!
I remember my mam telling me that when they demolished the north block(but south facing ) block of garages at Thirston Way on Kenton Bar Estate they re-seeded the land for grass...however apparently the seeds contained turnip seeds(or some such root vegetable) and a fine crop sprouted!-I can't recall if this story made the chronicle, but I will endevour to find out...Incidently, why did they demolish the north block/south facing garages, eh?.......master, do you recall this incident?....
They seem to have demolished quite a lot of the garages and the ones that remain are a lot more visible. Perhaps that is the answer.
ReplyDeletecorrect Shades, I suspect due to hooliganism and vandalism(probable from the ruffians and bounders from the bottom...)wonder what they were doing that made the council knock them down...?
ReplyDeleteProbably stealing cars...
ReplyDeletewe had a garage in the north block and it was locked up like fort knox to keep the rufians out......
ReplyDeleteNow with all the garages buttoned up tight where do the kids store their bonny wood?
ReplyDeleteTalking about growing vegetables. In the 80's there were a few Vietnamese boat refugees housed on the estate. Obviously given their backgrounds they could not understand why the grass verges and other grassed areas were used to grow grass and flowers. One enterprising family soon had some of the grassed areas sown with onions, garlic and sundry other vegetables.
ReplyDeletewhere was this master?...I have no recollection of this...please elaborate...
